Having the time to blog and finishing three books in one month…I don’t even know who I am right now! I guess that’s what happens when babies start to grow up and need you a little less (sob) and snow and sickness confine you to your house for a month straight. Either way I’m not mad about it!
Quick aside. The fact that to out of three of these books came from the library is almost shameful to me. My own personal bookshelf could possibly be considered it’s own library due to the amount of books on it that have not been read. I don’t understand myself. At least I didn’t purchase these books on top of the ones I still need to read of my own, right? (<– That was mainly for my husband who mostly reads this blog but will probably skip over this one because it’s about books). Goal for February: Read some of the books you already have.
Breaking Free by Rachel Jeffs – 3 Stars
Hopefully by now you have accepted my weird fascination with cults (specifically polygamy) and are able to love me through it. I had really high hopes for this book, maybe too high, because it is the story of Warren Jeffs’ (the FLDS cult leader to this day) daughter and her escape from the church. While it was interesting to hear her story, there were a few parts that made it hard for me to read. Her accounts of the abuse she suffered as a YOUNG child were too graphic for me and I had to skip over most of that chapter because it was too upsetting. Her writing also didn’t flow very well at times. Overall, I would choose to read it again but this book is definitely the best I’ve read from someone who escaped polygamy.
Hissy Fit by Mary Kay Andrews – 2 Stars
I’ve read a ton of Mary Kay Andrews’ books in my life (Fixer Upper and Ladies Night are my favorites) and this one was probably my least favorite. It took me FOREVER to read, like as in I probably started this book in October of last year then taking a break for some holiday themed books in November/December. It’s about an interior designer who calls off her wedding by causing a huge scene at her rehearsal dinner after catching her fiance in a compromising position. She takes a ride home from a man who just happens to have bought the biggest house around and needs someone’s help to restore it to it’s former glory. So the main story focuses on the house and the relationship between those two, which I liked, but there is a huge side story about her dead mother that I never could get in to. I knew where the story was headed from about the second page so I think the only thing that made me keep reading was to see how they ended up there! Not my favorite book (obviously), I’d save your time for something better!
The Marriage Lie by Kimberly Belle – 4 Stars
I am SUCH an audio book fan lately! It’s the best thing for those us whole love books but don’t have a ton of free time and also can’t keep our eyes open past 9:00. 100% guilty as charged on that one. I do find that I prefer them if they have a single narrator because it can be hard for me to pay close enough attention to follow multiple narrators. ANYWAYS. The Marriage Lie is a suspense novel about a woman who’s husband dies in a plane crash on a plane going the opposite direction of where he told her he was headed. She tries to figure out why that would be and quickly realizes there were a lot of things about him that she didn’t know. I was hooked in the first few chapters of this book and dying to know everything by the end! The very end was a little over-dramatic for me but this book is totally worth a read if suspense is your thing!
I’m currently reading Seven Days of Us and listening to My Husband’s Wife on audio book. Both of which are from the library so failing on my February goal so far, ha. Let me know what you guys are reading or any recommendations at all down in the comments!
